Better With Art

Finding balance in bilateral drawing

What is bilateral drawing and how does it help our brains? Grab your art journal or a piece of paper, and two writing implements, and join me to find out. It doesn’t have to be great art to be valuable. Take a little break with me and practice creative self-care with bilateral drawing.

Welcome to BETTER WITH ART! I’m Melinda and I’m here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care with weekly small-art prompts that can be done in the privacy of an art journal or on paper if you don’t have one.

Materials

If you’d like an art journal that’s ideal for my simple form of art journaling that uses various mediums, the paper is important. It needs to be a heavy weight and preferably hot-press because although I love the texture of cold-press it’s really hard on markers and pens. The mixed-media one I use in my videos and the art journaling groups at the library where I work is 140lb/300gsm. It stands up to all my dry, wet, and layered applications. Sold in a three-pack, it also remains the best regular-price value that I’ve found: UGH! CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK in the size I recommend.

But I’ve been trying out these.
And have ordered these to try next.

This is not as inexpensive, but there is a ten percent coupon at the moment, and I’d like to try it.
If you add a pack of more sheets you can also save an extra five percent.

I’ve been experimenting with these Dylusions creative journals to modify for Muse packs to spark your creativity. So far, so good, at least with collage-type pages. The pages are more ivory or like a pale manila folder than white, and like a heavy cardstock.

This week I also used colored Sharpies.
